Many aircraft, including many SEP and MLA piston and electric aircraft, are now fitted with electronic instruments (EFIS).
What is less known, is that many of these systems either log the recorded flight flight data, or have the option to do so.
The range of parameters and frequency of recording varies across equipment and aircraft, but in general at least the most basic parameters like attitude, barometric, pitostatic and positional data are recorded once per second.
Commercial aviation has proven that, used correctly, these data can significantly improve savety investigations, and crew debriefings, and thus flight safety in general.
Our FDR service on this websites gives tools to analyse recorded data, and export it to files that can be used to easily generate animations based on the data.
Using analysis and animation is not only useful for incident investigation, but can add significant value to flight trainng debriefing. For example, you could debrief general handling or circuit excersises as flown by solo students, increasing the value of the debrief as the instructor is no longer fully reliant on the students recollection of the flight.
Watching an animation with a trainee or debriefed pilot can be a huge advantage as it adds an objective element.
Commercial aviation has shown that flight data can enhance saety to a great extend. Is has also shown that unjust or incorrect use of flight data can undermine trust in the safety system of an airline, flight school or the aviation system in general.
Ìt is therefore important that the data is always used with the consent of, and in cooperation with, the flight commander and any relevant crew members.
In this regard, it's worthwhile to see how EASA has implementated mandatory Flight Data Monitoring on larger commercial aircraft.
Flight data analysis and debriefing must be done within a Just Culture; the prime guideline being that the pilot(s) will have been trying to get everything right.
Flight Data can aid in analysing where they succeeded, and perhaps where they did not. It never explains the full picture of why.
